Experience matters!
I am an independent consultant ophthalmologist working at the Sussex Premier Hospital in East Sussex (Former Spire Sussex Hospital). I hold two fellowships specialising in Glaucoma (Toronto, Canada – 2004-2005) and Medical Retina (Bristol, England – 2003-2004).
My previous post was consultant ophthalmologist with special interest in Glaucoma and Medical Retina and I was also clinical lead for 10 years at the Conquest Hospital, Hastings (2005 to Feb 2018).
I am a very experienced ophthalmic surgeon and perform procedures to treat cataract, glaucoma, oculoplastic, medical retinal and anterior segment conditions. In addition I am experienced in high-volume day case cataract surgery (personally performed over 20 000 procedures) as well as complex cataract extractions, I set up and ran the diabetic screening in East Sussex until I left the NHS and the programme is responsible for screening 25 000 patients per year.
I am published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and present regularly at national and international events. I have completed numerous clinical and laboratory research projects in Ophthalmology and also have a keen interest in teaching, with qualifications in career counselling and medical education.
My current interests lie in cataract surgery combined with minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS). I have the largest UK cohort of patients treated with endoscopic laser for treating glaucoma combined with cataract extraction (Phaco ECP) and also the best regional results with Xen stent implantation.
I helped to establish the charity, Andean Medical Mission (http://www.andeanmedicalmission.co.uk/) in 2011 aimed at treating and preventing blindness in the Bolivian Amazon and go on yearly trips to work in this highly impoverished community.
Surgery in the Amazon is very challenging but very rewarding as well !
